About Me

Hello there… I am Kiera – a wife, blogger, aspiring writer, dog owner, quilter, wannabe seamstress, crafter, and budding traveler. I live in the scenic Pacific Northwest with my wonderful husband, beloved doxie, and two special Bengal cats.

I am happily married to the man of my dreams, a brilliant engineer with more brains and commonsense than I can ever hope to have. He is an academic who loves learning, knowledge, and solving problems. I am a non-academic who barely had the drive to graduate with my degree, has no intention of getting a second degree any time soon, and can’t make decisions. We are an odd match, but ironically perfect for each other. Together with our three fur kids, we are busy turning our four bedroom house into a home.

When I met my husband (Mr. Tux, MT, hubby, DH), he already had two exotic Bengal cats – Zeus and Apollo. After about 15 months of marriage, he let me bring home a puppy to his clean, never been touched by a dog, organized house. The plan was for the puppy to shut me up about wanting kids. It worked. My mini doxie Tuxley is my whole world and enough baby for me. He is spoiled, babied, and treated like a human member of the family. Confession: he even has his own car seat…pathetic I know, but handy for traveling and oh so cute! Now, instead of having a baby, we spoil and love our three fur kids, and plan on not having children. I love my life!

I started my blog in 2011 as way to record the day to day happenings and provide a creative outlet for my writing. After posting sporadically on my schmetterling21.wordpress site, I decided to re-vamp and overhaul my blog. It took me several months of playing with ideas, domain/site names, wresting with what I topics I actually wanted to cover, and bugging Mr. Tux to reach a final decision. In March 2013, Whimsical Notions came to be. Now, Whimsical Notions is the place where I record and share the adventures of our life. I write about life with a nerdy engineer of a husband, doxies, Bengal cats, cycling. Sprinkled amongst the daily life posts, are my mis-adventures adventures in sewing, quilting, crocheting, and knitting projects. Who knows what life has in store, but join me and we can explore together. After all, these are my Whimsical Notions as I develop and nurture the woman, wife, and writer I want to be.

Welcome to Whimsical Notions. I invite you to make a hot drink, pull up a chair, and hold on for an adventure.

  3. Hello, I am enjoying rading about you and your life. Will help an old Auntie get to know her niece, and I look forward to reading your posts. Looks like so far that if we lived close together we could have some fun times together as kindred spirits. May you home and life be blessed and filled with love.

  4. I need to say that you are awesome. I google searched dachshund robes and a picture of your Tuxley in his hoodie came up! He is adorable. My Torben dislikes his clothes, but he started shivering with the onset of fall, so on goes his sweater. Also…Howl’s Moving Castle? Awesome. Sushi? More awesome. Putting them together for a lovely date night? Extreme awesome.

  5. I came across your blog while looking for reviews on the Voyager coats for Dachshunds. Just wondering how cold it gets where you are and how well it works for your boy? I have a mini doxie and living in MN it’s frigid…I’d love to have a custom, WARM, coat for him to wear out on walks and whatnot in the winter, but am afraid of spending all that money for something not worth it. How does he like the fleece hood? Does he pee on his coat (huge problem for male dogs, haha)? Any other input you have on the coat would be fantastic. I’m debating buying the fleece tummy warmer too, but am not sure if a regular dog sweater (we have quite a few) would work just as well under the coat if needed. Please feel free to email me, carbonxxkidd@gmail.com. Thank you so much!

  6. Hello again. I was at Joanns crafts yesterday (in Utah that is) and found about four new flannel dachshund prints and one quilter’s cotton dachshund print. It reminded me of you.

    • Jealous. I love finding dachshund fabric! I will have to check Joanns again. This past weekend I picked up a blue polka dot flannel with brown dachshunds on it. So cute! It is destined for special sleeping bag/snuggle sack for Tuxley. Does Torben love blankets and cuddling during the winter?

      • Torben loves to cuddle no matter the weather. In fact, almost every time my husband and I try to cuddle, in runs Torben to get right in between us! We have dubbed him the “In-betweener-wiener.” Or he’ll have to sit on one of our laps during movie time. You do a great job on your dog and people blankets. It inspired me to make a few for some family friends that are moving to Idaho from the much milder CA. But first I have to get a new sewing machine.

  7. Hello! I saw the dachshund flannel you were working with and laughed- I purchased the same lime-green one for a baby blanket to make for a friend! The flannel for the backside has almost all the same colors, plus some glow-in-the-dark dots. Great minds think alike! My mother-in-law gave me her Kenmore sewing machine from 1978. It purrs like a contented kitten and I can’t live without it. I haven’t seen a blog post from you in a while, so I hope you’re doing well. Maybe you’re like me and still somewhat recovering from the holidays. By the way, I got the idea for making simple baby blankets from you, so thank you. Happy crafting!

    • I loved the lime-green dachshund flannel. It would make a perfect baby blanket. It’s so cool you are enjoying making the simple baby blankets. I am still around, just have been busy and not blogging as much. Happy Crafting!
